Maddie Serkeyn
September 2026 Cohort
Hello! My name is Maddison Serkeyn (She/Her), and I am a counselling intern at Couch of HOPE. I am currently completing my Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University, and I hold a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Psychology from Saint Mary’s University.
My interest in counselling was sparked during my undergraduate studies and deepened through my research experience, in which I interviewed individuals from diverse backgrounds. Speaking with people who had experienced challenges such as homelessness, addiction, and systemic barriers deepened my understanding of the importance of human connection, accessibility, feeling heard, and the role these play in healing and growth. These experiences have continued to shape how I show up in my work today and have created a lasting impact that has furthered my interest in becoming a counsellor.
I am passionate about supporting individuals of all ages as they navigate life’s challenges with warmth, authenticity, and care. I am interested in supporting clients who are navigating anxiety, depression, life transitions and personal growth. My approach to counselling is grounded in client-centred, holistic practices rooted in empathy, respect, collaboration and the belief that each person is the expert of their own life. My counselling style is informed by evidence-based approaches, drawing from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), mindfulness practices, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and Solution-Focused therapy. I aim to tailor each session to meet your unique needs and goals, and strive to create a warm, nonjudgmental, safe space for my clients.
I believe counselling is most effective when there is a genuine sense of connection and trust. As an emerging counsellor, I am committed to meeting you where you are, listening without judgment, and working collaboratively toward the changes you hope to see in your life.
I look forward to connecting and being a part of your counselling journey!
